 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves

'A new vision for the Decade 2016-2025 – UNESCO Biosphere Reserves for Sustainable Development’ 

The 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves (WCBR) was hosted in Lima, Peru from 14th to 17th March 2016. The event brought together representatives from all over the world people working directly in and with Biosphere Reserves including from the UNESCO 'an and the Biosphere' Programme, biosphere reserves, government, community members and other related organisations. 

The main areas covered at the event were:

  • A post-2015 Development Agenda for Biosphere Reserves
  • Issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Discuss progress & challenges related to Biosphere Reserves issues
  • Develop a new vision for the future

The congress will also discuss topics around sustainable economic development, the economic viability of nature conservation systems as well as the protection and sustainable use of natural resources amongst others.

'Economics in and around Biosphere Reserves'

The workshop 'Economics in and around Biosphere Reserves' was part of the event and presented a range of approaches to economic development in Biosphere Reserves that fit with the SEBR approach and their relevance in sustainable development. The workshop was hosted by Colin Campbell, executive director of Assist Social Capital, and was attended by 72 officials from 35 different countries.

The new online platform OASIIS  ‘Opening Access for Sustainable Independent Income Streams’  was also launched during the workshop (see video 'OASIIS Video Launch, right column).

Outcomes

  • The event also launched the World Network of Biosphere Reserves Strategy and Action Plan for the next 10 years, the Lima Action Plan [en], which includes references to social enterprise and social entrepreneurs. Leading up to the launch of the new Lima Action Plan, recommendations for the new action plan as well as a social enterprise action plan had been worked on by the SEBR network group at the International Conference 2015 in Scotland.
